I am once again hosting the Davis Mountains hunt again in January 2020 the dates will be January 18-26. We will arrive at the ranch on the 18th head to camp on the 19th and return on the ranch HQ on the 25th and depart ranch on the 26th,

There will be a slight change from the previous hunts and that there will be no horses. I know this was an added adventure, but due to issues beyond my control, the horses will not be available this time.

My plan for this hunt will be to hike in about 1.5 miles to an area that has a good camping site to set up in. This area is close to a spring that will provide us with water. The hunting opportunities will be the same.

If you are interested and sign up, please note that this is a physically demanding hunt with rugged terrain.

There will be 6 slots available for this hunt

One should be able to carry a pack that is 40-50 pounds in weight.
Equipment needed:
Back pack
Back packing stove
water pump
2, 1 liter water bottles
Freeze dried food
High calorie snacks for mid day
Oat meal, protein bars, etc. for breakfast
Tent
Sleeping pad
Sleeping bag
Anything else that you think you might need

I think if we coordinate we can share the load by pairing up and sharing a tent and other items

Licence requirements:
Non-resident 5-Day Special Hunting
Type 157:$48
Legal for any period of 5 consecutive days (valid hunting dates will be printed on the license when issued). Valid to hunt:
exotic animals,
all legal game birds (except turkeys),
all non game animals, squirrel, javelina and alligator (not valid for other game animals, NOT VALID FOR DEER).

The weather this time of the year is pleasant with lows probably in the 30s and highs in the 50s or 60s, so light weight hunting clothing will suffice. I wore light weight wool pants and shirt last year during the hunt and added a wool vest in the early morning.

I would suggest for breakfast maybe oatmeal along with some type of protein bars and hot liquids.  I am planning on PB&J sandwiches for lunch, along with some jerky, candy bar and granola bars. Plan your meals according to your desire.

Saturday evening we will all meet together eat in town.

Sunday morning breakfast will be at the ranch HQ (The restaurant where we will on Saturday has some awesome burritos one can purchase and reheat in the morning.

Sunday afternoon through Saturday morning, meals will be in camp. 6 dinner meals, 6 lunch meals and 6 breakfast meals

Water. There are springs near camp that will supply us with water.  I suggest filtering the water. If anyone has a collapsible 5 gallon water container please bring one. I have one that I will be bringing.

Probably a good idea to bring a good pair of leather work gloves as well.

Cost for this years hunt will be a $100.00 donation to the ranch DSC00820[1][1].jpg  IMG_1733[1][1].jpg  ZDavis%2520Hog%25202017[1][1].jpg  DSCN0700.jpg  IMG_1591.jpg  IMG_1536.jpg  DSCN0759.jpg  DSCN0388.jpg

Unfortunately, a work situation has come up, and I won't be able to be away from work that week, so I will have to bow out.  I spoke to my ex partner who is the only person who can, and usually will, cover for me.  He is scheduled for surgery on January  20th. Slight chance that the  dates may change, but I don't want to hold anyone back from joining the hunt. Good luck.

Thanks Bubba for hosting this one again, I sure wish I could join the fun.  Just too close in schedule to my GA hog hunt.  This year would be perfect with the hike in, cause me and horses don’t get along.😡 I have been bit, kicked and thrown off them, yet I still own a couple now, just to keep my wife happy.🐴
This is what happens when you surprise your menopausal wife with news about your next hunting trip and she happens to be a former kick boxing champ of NC....

I suppose we need to coordinate in 2021, so that you can attend.

Is this at Fort Davis, TX?  If so, this is one of my favorite areas that I’ve ever hunted. I hunted the area years ago and arrowed everything from javalina to a lion. The history of the area is incredible and it is amazing hunting. I would love to be able get free. I always looked forward to whitetail and late season mule deer being over in January so I could plan hunting there.  Awesome people too.

The hunt takes place just NW of Fort Davis about 15 miles as the crow flies.

We would love to have you in camp.

Bubba, will you be camping near the needle rock & spring? Trying to remember the flat area for tent use. Looking at the map. May consider this again, if you end up with an open spot. A great hunt.

Mike,
Yes, there is an old camp sight just before you get to needle rock. Go ahead and sign up.

ok Bubba - Get myself and Smiley Hoffman on the attendance list for this hunt(2 people total). Confirm back, and I can start getting hotel rooms booked, etc. Thanks again for putting on this hunt. Guess I just can't get enough of cat claw brush. Ha

BTW - I am planning on traveling direct to Ft Davis, to arrive before dusk on Friday. I want to attend one of those sky parties at the McDonald Observatory, and am hoping that they will have tickets available to look through one of those jumbo telescopes they have there. Once in a life time deal, and I am hoping it'll work out. Are you guys planning on arriving at the ranch mid afternoon on Saturday?

Got you two added. Paul and I will arrive Saturday evening. The plan is to meet in Balmoreah with everyone and have dinner, then head to ranch.
